Every FMK condition
299 diseases, deficiencies, toxicities and drug mechanisms harvested from every FMK deck — the ones sprinkled through a single bullet as much as the ones with their own slide. Pick what you're given and what you have to name, or let it cycle; distractors come from the same category so you have to discriminate (hypoketotic vs. ketotic hypoglycemia, which GSD, which urea-cycle enzyme…). Every answer shows the whole card with the lecture and slide.
Vitamin · FMK 04.4
Steatorrhea and fat-soluble vitamin (A, D, E, K) deficiency Acquired / not inherited
Defect / target: Poor digestion (cystic fibrosis, no pancreatic lipase) or malabsorption (short bowel syndrome, celiac disease, bile acid deficiency, chylomicron assembly defect)
Mechanism: Vitamins A, D, E, K all require mixed-micelle incorporation and chylomicron packaging, so any upstream defect (lipase, bile salts, chylomicron assembly) takes all four down together.
↑ Accumulates: fecal fat· ↓ Deficient: vitamins A, D, E, K
Presentation: vitamin A → night blindness; vitamin D → rickets/osteomalacia; vitamin E → ataxia, areflexia, peripheral neuropathy; vitamin K → bleeding
Labs: ↑ fecal fat, elevated PT (vitamin K)
Board tip: isolated fat-soluble vitamin deficiency with normal diet → search for pancreatic, biliary or enterocyte-level fat malabsorption
