Defect / target: Untreated thiamine deficiency (chronic)
Mechanism: Untreated Wernicke encephalopathy progresses to permanent damage of memory circuits.
· ↓ Deficient: thiamine
Presentation: anterograde amnesia, confabulation; irreversible in 80%
Treatment: thiamine (prevention); largely irreversible
